CULTURAL CAPITAL SHORT FILMS As part of Charlottetown’s 2011 Cultural Capital of Canada designation, the City of Charlottetown, in partnership with the Island Media Arts Coop (IMAC), the Island Film Factory (IFF) and the Interactive Media Alliance (IMA), has commissioned the creation of five original short films and interactive media. Two will be from WIFT-Atlantic members Jo-Dee Samuelson and Mille Clarkes.
JoDee’s is called A Brief History of Charlottetown: from the Last Ice Age to the Present – an animated film, presented in both French and English versions.
Mille’s documentary, In Between Spaces, is an experimental video project engaging several artists in the exploration of the notion of communal gaze. In Between Spaces will gather the footage captured on four roaming video cameras (representing the four directions) that are placed in the hands of twelve individuals. It will weave the gazes of these many perspectives into one web-like vision of the shared experience of small town life.
CELLAR DOOR’S NEW WEB SERIES: CHEF MICHAEL’S KITCHEN
Gretha Rose, head honchette at Cellar Door Productions AND a WIFT-Atlantic member, has been busy producing a new web series for and with her star Chef Michael Smith. The series – Chef Michael’s Kitchen – completed shooting in his own kitchen in rural PEI in early June. The Cellar Door team has moved on to an hour-long documentary that is currently before the camera on locations all over the Island.
VAST Periscope Pictures’ short film Vast won the CBC Audience Award at the 2011 Island Media Arts Festival in May. Written, directed and produced by WIFT-Atlantic member Harmony Wagner and shot on location in Prince Edward Island, the visually stunning Vast is Wagner’s directorial debut.
BLUE MOUNTAIN ENTERTAINMENT EXPLORES THE MUSIC VIDEO FORMAT
Director Susan Rodgers is flexing her creative muscles with a challenging music video for the song Silence Bloodhound, full of flashbacks and fireworks. The shoot will take place in Summerside in mid-July.
BUNNY BOP! HOPS TO BANFF
An 11 minute TV version of Periscope Pictures’ Bunny Bop! pre-school web series was selected as the Best Pilot in the Children and Youth category of the Banff Media Awards. Producers and WIFT-Atlantic members Cheryl Wagner and Harmony Wagner headed to Banff from June 12-16, 2011 and thoroughly enjoyed WIFT-Alberta’s Martini Madness Party, declaring it the best fete of the festival. Harmony was also thrilled to be a recipient of a 2011 CTV National Fellowship to attend the Banff World Media Festival . These fellowships encourage professional development in the television industry by enabling emerging creative talent – including producers, writers and directors to attend this prestigious industry event. Lots learned. And a valuable time networking.
