Reel Talk Reely Works!

We’ve wrapped up the first season of Reel Talk, and it’s been an exciting four months.  We started Reel Talk as a way to fulfill a couple of the goals for Women in Film and Television: to promote networking and to offer events that recognize the talents and potential of women in our industry. The Reel Talk conversations offer a chance to spend the evening getting to know one artist and her work in a focused, intimate setting, in the live interview style of ‘Inside The Actor’s Studio’. Word has spread and our audience is growing!

Our 2011 guests have been:  Connie Littlefield, Rita Shelton Deverell, Becky Parsons, Siloën Daley & Penelope Knockabout. After a summer break, we will be back with Eva Madden (September), Jan Miller (October) and Sylvia Hamilton (November). We hope you will join us.

Friday, June 24 (our last Reel Talk before our summer break) featured filmmakers Penelope Knockout & Siloën Daley (Carbon Arc founder!). We opened the evening with screening Siloën’s short, Olive Prepares, and Penelope’s short, When Judith Met Theo, as well as the short The Lonely Rabbit by Christina Felderhoff. Siloën and Penelope talked about Helen Hill, the filmmaker who inspired both of them years ago when she was teaching animation at AFCOOP.  Not only did Helen educate them about the craft of filmmaking, but she also inspired them with her just-do-it approach to life. As a result of Helen’s seminal teaching, in 2007, Siloën created a program of animated short films and embarked on a tour of North America. On the road, she was further inspired by the independent screening venues she visited across the continent. With Helen’s inspiration still burning in her ears, Siloën returned, impassioned and with renewed focus. With the assistance of fellow volunteers and filmmakers, especially Alan Collins, Carbon Arc was launched in July 2010.

Penelope shared her story of personal inspiration from Helen too.  Helen expected all of her students to make a short film in a weekend and, arming them with basic training and equipment, Penelope just did it – something she says she is still amazed that she accomplished.  All three films screened at Reel Talk that night were dedicated to Helen Hill, a testament to the huge significance of inspirational teachers and mentors.
